All data can be found in an Excel download located on the student loan dataset page. Data is updated two months post the end of each quarter.

Number of student loan borrowers

This graph shows the number of student loan borrowers by New Zealand-based, and overseas-based, as at the end of each quarter.

This graph has multiple vertical bars tracking the number of New Zealand-based and overseas-based borrowers. The vertical axis shows the number of borrowers. The horizontal axis shows quarterly data from 31 March 2013 to 31 March 2024.

As at 31 March 2024 the:

• Total number of New Zealand-based student loan borrowers decreased by 4.7% from 540,100 in March 2023 to 514,619 in March 2024.
• Total number of overseas-based student loan borrowers increased by 6.2% from 104,768 in March 2023 to 111,302 in March 2024.
• Total number of all student loan borrowers decreased by 2.9% from 644,868 in March 2023 to 625,921 in March 2024.

Notes:

• A borrower is any person who has drawn from the Student Loan Scheme and not yet repaid in full.
