Check your balance date

The standard balance date is 31 March. Check if your industry has a recognised balance date.

Balance dates

Apply to change your balance date

To change your business’s balance date you need to send us a letter. The letter needs to include:

  • your full name and IRD number
  • your industry
  • the balance date you want to use and why
  • actual or predicted cashflows, stock patterns, customer demands or seasonal patterns that would make the proposed balance date better for your business
  • any other information that shows why the proposed balance date is better for your business.

You may want to change your business’s balance date so it matches a business you have a close trading relationship with. If this applies to you, include the name of the other business and its IRD number.

We can backdate the change in balance date if you tell us why it is needed.
