  • opening a bank account
  • joining KiwiSaver
  • applying for Working for Families, child support, FamilyBoost or a student loan
  • buying, selling or transferring property in New Zealand.

Children's IRD numbers

If you are applying for any kind of family payments, you will need an IRD number for your child. Children also need IRD numbers of their own if they earn an income, including interest payments from a bank account or investment.
